Individualized Education Program

What is an individualized education program (IEP)?
An IEP is a written statement for your child with a disability that's developed, reviewed and revisited in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.  Your family and the child's educational team will sit down and create a plan to help your child get the best possible education.

What are the rights of the family and how are they involved?
The law specifies six regulations for the IEP.  As the family of a child with a disability, you will be included in discussing the following:

       1. The required content of your child's IEP
       2. How you will receive progress reports for your child
       3. Who should be included in the IEP team
       4. Considerations in the development of the IEP
       5. The role of the regular education teacher
       6. Requirements for review and revision of the IEP

The special education teacher will keep you up to date on where and when the IEP will take place.  The family is an extremely important aspect to the development of an IEP.  Parental consent must be obtained in order for the IEP to go forward or be changed.
