Free and Appropriate Education

What does it mean to be provided a free and appropriate education or FAPE?
Also known as the zero reject principle, FAPE requires that no child be denied public education.  According to the Individuals with Disabilities Act,  FAPE must: (A) Have been provided at public expense, under public supervision and direction, and without charge; (B) meet the standards of the State educational agency; (C) include an appropriate preschool, elementary, or secondary school education in the State involved; and (D) are provided in conformity with the individualized education program under section 614(d).

How can the family stay involved?
You have the right to make sure that your child is in the best possible placement to reach his/her maximum potential.  The law states that the child is entitled to an appropriate education so it's important to make sure the school is providing this.  You can participate in your child's FAPE by talking to your child's educational team about grades, progress on IEP goals and standardized test scores that might affect whether or not the current placement is the best.  You're also entitled to visit your child's school and see what kind of education they are receiving.
